That character 喜 on its own means joy, delight, or auspicious happiness — but it carries a weight closer to "a joyful occasion" than a personal feeling.
So the literal breakdown is: double + auspicious joy = 囍. Not just happiness times two, but a layering — joy upon joy, blessings compounding.
More Complex Than Western Happiness
